Priority 1

Focus Instruction on Intentional Design Learning

Instruction will be grounded in the principles of Intentional Design, emphasizing clarity, appropriate challenge, and strong relationships, while providing students with meaningful feedback on both their mastery of content and their engagement throughout the learning process.

Strategic Priority One
Why is this important?Focusing instruction on Intentional Design Learning ensures that teaching is purposeful, rigorous, and aligned to standards while keeping student growth at the center. When instruction is built around clarity, appropriate challenge, and strong relationships, students are more likely to develop deep understanding and the ability to apply learning in new contexts (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). Research shows that high-quality, standards-aligned curriculum combined with intentional instructional design significantly improves student achievement (Kaufman et al., 2020; Darling-Hammond et al., 2020).

Moreover, intentional design emphasizes feedback and self-regulation, helping students monitor their own progress—an approach strongly linked to higher achievement and long-term learning gains (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). For teachers, intentional design provides coherence: aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment reduces gaps and overlaps, ensuring that all students engage in meaningful, demanding work (Choppin et al., 2018).
